John Reynard and I were invited to write the Oxford Handbook of Urology to
bolster the already comprehensive collection of these familiar handbooks
by Oxford University Press in 2003. We had been appointed as consultants
in Oxford in 1998, both enthusiastic and active in teaching, research, and
publication, having already produced successful urology textbooks, already
proud co- authors of a book called Urology: A Handbook for Medical Students,
published in 2001. So we were delighted to accept the invitation. Suzanne
Biers, our talented junior trainee, joined us as co- author, initially providing a
perspective first as a senior house officer, then as a specialist registrar, and
ultimately as a Cambridge consultant by the third edition.
